What is mold and why might you find mold in your home?

Molds are types of fungi that our very common in the environment around us. Molds break down dead plant and animal matter outdoors as part of the natural life cycle. However, mold is something you would like to avoid inside of your home.

There are many different types and colors of mold, but they all need moisture to grow. Mold also needs food to grow, such as wood, insulation, or drywall. Under the right conditions, mold can grow on practically anything.

Mold spreads via the tiny spores it produces for reproduction. These microscopic spores are all around us, traveling through the air. When these spores land in areas with moisture and food, mold will grow and can spread.

Mold growth in a home is a result of excess moisture and warm temperatures. Unfortunately, mold grows quite well at the temperatures where we typically keep our homes.

There could be many sources of moisture in a home, such as a roof leak, a flood, a bursting or leaky pipe, or even as a result of poor exterior drainage around your home. Under the right conditions, some mold can take hold in less than 48 hours after moisture appears.

It is best to try and prevent mold growth in your home. You should proactively inspect your home and make sure that any areas that might be prone to a mold or water intrusion issue are performing as desired.

If you begin to see signs of water damage or mold damage, you likely already have a problem with obvious symptoms and it is time to call for help and get it fixed.
